I have maxed out a few characters to level 50 but cant increase them any higher until i have promoted them does any one know what this means as i am struggling to find it.

You have to evolve them to a certain level before you can upgrade them further.
You evolve them by going to the ‘Evolve’ tab in the hero menu:
It requires a certain quantity of hero evolve crystals.
