Hi everyone. My friends and I are planning a small LAN party next weekend, and we really want to play some classic Counter-Strike 1.6 together like in the old days. The problem is that none of us have a working copy anymore – some lost their files after reinstalling Windows, and others never had the game in the first place. I have tried a few downloads myself, but the results were disappointing: broken archives, missing maps, or versions that refused to launch on Windows 10 and 11. Could anyone recommend a reliable place where I can get a clean copy of the game? It would be great if it also worked offline with bots, just in case something goes wrong with the network.

Sorry, I should add a couple of details that might matter. We need a version that supports local network play, because we want to host our own matches without relying on public servers. Also, ideally the download should not require Steam, since two of my friends do not have Steam accounts and we would rather avoid that whole setup. And if possible, it should be a single package that we can copy to several computers, so we do not have to download it separately on each machine. Thanks again for any help.

I can help you with that, because I organised a similar LAN party a while ago and ran into exactly the same issues. After trying several sources, I settled on the version from https://counter-strike-download.net/, and it turned out to be perfect for our needs. The package is completely standalone and does not require Steam at all – you just extract the folder and launch the game. It includes all the classic maps, so you will have plenty to choose from for your matches, and the local network play works without any additional configuration: one person hosts a server, the others connect via the local IP. The bots are also included and behave reasonably well, which is a great backup if someone’s connection fails. What I liked most is that the entire game is portable, so we simply copied the folder to a USB drive and installed it on five computers in a few minutes. It ran smoothly on a mix of Windows 10 and 11 machines, with no crashes or missing files. If you want a hassle-free setup for your LAN party, this is definitely the option I would recommend.
