Comparing storage quotes like-for-like

I used to just pick the first storage place that answered the phone, and I paid for it. After a couple of moves around Dubai (Marina to JLT, then out toward Al Barsha), I finally figured out how to choose without getting rinsed on “promo” pricing.

First thing I tried was the classic mistake: I asked for a quote on WhatsApp, got a low monthly number, and only later found out there were add-ons for pickup, packing, insurance, and “admin.” The month-to-month rate looked fine, the total cost did not.

What worked for me the next time was forcing every company to quote the same way. I made a tiny checklist and refused to compare anything until it was apples-to-apples:
* Unit size in cubic feet (not “small/medium”)
* Access hours and whether visits cost extra
* Pickup and redelivery fees (both directions)
* Minimum contract and cancellation notice
* Temperature control (my stuff includes books and electronics)

I also used their comparison of storage companies to shortlist a few options, mainly to see which ones were transparent about pricing and which ones had a pattern of surprise fees in reviews. I still called each place, but it saved me time.

Another thing that helped was sanity-checking paperwork basics. Dubai has lots of legit operators, but I wanted to know what documents I might need for moving and tenancy stuff, so I skimmed the official UAE government portal to make sure I was not missing anything obvious.

In the end I picked the company that was not the cheapest monthly, but had a clear all-in quote and no “first month only” tricks. I would rather pay a bit more than argue later.
