50391251ParticipantARC Raiders, the multiplayer extraction shooter from Embark Studios, had a strong launch last year and quickly gained attention for its intense raids and polished gunplay. However, one aspect that didn’t land well with many players was the game’s heavy use of AI-generated voice lines, especially for in-game pings and small bits of dialogue. Some players felt the synthetic voices sounded stiff or robotic, which could break immersion during tense moments. Recently, the studio confirmed it has started replacing many of those lines with recordings from professional voice actors.
The change was discussed in an interview with Embark CEO Patrick Söderlund. According to Söderlund, the team listened to player feedback and recognized that human performances simply sound better in many situations. He explained that while AI tools can be useful during development, there’s still a clear difference when a real actor delivers the line. Because of that, the studio has already begun re-recording certain voice lines since the game’s launch, gradually reducing how much AI-generated audio remains in the game.
At release in October 2025, the use of AI voices was largely a practical decision. During development, the team needed a fast way to add spoken lines without scheduling long recording sessions. The voices were generated using models trained on licensed actor recordings, which helped the team quickly test dialogue and communication features. Design director Virgil Watkins previously described the system as a useful shortcut while the project was under time pressure.
Now that the game has established a strong player base, the studio has more flexibility to improve things. Some lines for characters, including Celeste and Shani, have already been replaced with actor recordings. Players have noticed the difference, especially during raids where quick voice cues help teammates coordinate during extractions. The updated performances feel more natural and make the communication system easier to follow in the middle of a fight.
Söderlund also made it clear that Embark doesn’t see AI as a full replacement for voice actors. Instead, the technology is mostly used internally to prototype dialogue. Developers can quickly generate multiple variations of a line, test them in gameplay, and then bring actors in later to record the final version. In some smaller cases—like location pings or minor background lines—the studio may still use licensed AI voices, but the actors behind those voices are compensated for their work.
The shift also reflects the studio’s growing confidence in the game’s success. ARC Raiders has remained one of the more popular shooters on Steam, and regular updates have kept the community active. By investing in new voice recordings, the team hopes to keep improving the overall experience and maintain long-term support for the game. Embark is taking a similar approach to its other multiplayer title, The Finals, where ongoing updates and community feedback play a big role in development decisions.
Community reactions so far have been mostly positive. Many players say the new recordings make the game feel more polished, while others see the change as a response to broader industry discussions about AI and voice acting. Some critics believe the studio is simply correcting a launch-day compromise, but even they acknowledge the improvements in audio quality.
Replacing some AI voices with professional actors is less about reversing course and more about refining the game after launch. As new updates arrive, the improved voice work helps make the world feel more believable and shows how the studio is willing to adjust based on player feedback. For many fans, it’s a sign that the developers are focused on polishing the experience rather than settling for shortcuts.
