A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) is a segmentation of a local area network into multiple sub-networks. Each VLAN is typically bridged to other VLANs to form one virtual network. VLANs allow the network administrator to define a specific broadcast domain, meaning that computers can only communicate with other computers in the same VLAN.
VLANs are created by isolating ports/devices on a switch. Networks on different VLANs do not communicate with each other unless they are connected to a router or firewall that is configured to allow packets from one VLAN to reach another. VLANs are used to segment broadcast domains in a large network and can provide improved network performance and better resource utilization through increased security and control.
